Dominos pays $500,000 in unpaid wages to New York workers
Twenty-three Domino’s Pizza franchise owners have
settled their class action lawsuit and
admitted guilt amounting to nearly a half
million dollars in damages to their deliver
drivers. This was not the first fast food
related New York
class action lawsuit
for wage theft in the last year. In fact, it
is the second time that Domino’s has settled
a class action lawsuit filed by a New York
City employee rights law firm.
There were several allegations included in
the court filings made by the plaintiffs. As
part of their employment contract, drivers
are supposed to be paid maintenance expenses
and keep all of the tips they earn. The
franchise owners were keeping portions of
their driver’s tips and not paying the
maintenance expenses as they were supposed
to as part of their employment agreement.
New York restaurant workers’ rights
attorneys say that the maintenance expenses
were not legally required to be paid
automatically, but the franchise owners
became legally obligated to pay them once
they were offered to the drivers as part of
their compensation.
The wage theft in this case is indicative of
a larger problem that routinely occurs all
throughout the food industry. Franchise
owners steal money from their employers out
of a sense of greed and entitlement. New
York employee rights attorneys encourage
restaurant employees to speak with an
attorney about their concerns in the
workplace. As a general rule of thumb, if it
seems like your employer is treating you
unjustly, then there is a good chance that
something they are doing is against the law.
More and more employee groups are empowering
themselves and taking action against abusive
and illegal actions by their employers.
Employees that band together in New York
class action lawsuits are able to swiftly
recover large monetary sums without the fear
of being singled out and retaliated against
by their employer. The two recent class
action lawsuits against Domino’s Pizza are
just two more examples of the happening.
